Joe Bonamassa, Plymouth, UK 2011

WHAT.A.PERFORMANCE!!
Joe Bonamassa Appeared onstage to an ear blistering, elevated audience inside the Pavillions, Plymouth.
The set opened with 'Cradle Rock', a Rory Gallagher cover, rolling straight into 'When the Fire Hits the Sea'. The Band are tight with instruments well warmed by this point.
'Midnight Blues' by Gary Moore was next on the set. A more than worthy tribute to the late great guitarist.
As the lights dimmed down again hiding a smooth guitar change, Joe faced the drummer ready for the stage to relight. Tal Bergman works up a steady, powerful "shunt" with the snare. Sounding exactly like a steam train, he picks up pace. Joe joins in time, matching the pitch. At climax the Les Paul breaks off to solo the intro to 'Slow Train', pulling the rest of the band with him. Such a powerful introduction!
The band then move swiftly into the title track off of the touring album, 'Dust Bowl'. Incredible.
The next 3 songs include 'You Better Watch Yourself', the Famous 'Sloe Gin', and "the closest track i had to a hit" explains Joe; The Ballad of John Henry'.

"Now, I've been a bit under the weather unfortunately with this virus" Joe explains "...So the only way for me to recover was to wait it out. In doing so i took the time to see if facebook had any answers for me in how to get rid of this cold... My top 2 favorite replies were these: The first; An English man. He explains that i should drink half a bottle of whiskey and screw a hot chick. The second, and my favorite was from a bloke from Tennesse, and he explained that i need to drink a WHOLE bottle of whiskey and screw a really fat woman... So you know what i did... i did both!"

The second half of the set sees songs such as 'Lonesome Road Blues', 'Happier Times', 'Song of Yesterday', and the WHO cover 'Young Man Blues', before Joe rolled into Django and the INCREDIBLE 'Mountain Time'.

The encore consisted of 'Bird on a wire' by Leonard Cohen, and the awesome 'Just got paid' by ZZ Top (ofcourse the latter featured the famous Gibson Flying V!!)

In all, an amazing evening. I will most DEFINITELY be seeing him again!!

Sunset, Isle of Wight

One of the most beautiful and rewarding sunsets i have ever witnessed.
From a cliff top on the south side of the island.

Chine Farm, Isle of Wight

A small ravine like gully led down towards the beach. Graced with natural waterfalls and washed up carnage, this made a very interesting scene.

Boredom

Created around midnight out of pure boredom, craving creative satisfaction.
A cardboard box fils the torso along with screwed up newspaper for shape. A clock forms the face, and two brooms shape the legs.
Based around our friends damp drying clothes we made it look as realistic as possible so that the early risers could enjoy the company.

Boat Making

  • Ok, so you find a river, lake, pond, bath tub, sink, anything with water, and then you find a piece of tall grass / reed. (Reed apparently works best, but i made do with a tall shoot of grass form the river bank).

  • You then proceed to fold round the piece of grass / reed until you are about halfway up the shoot.

  • With the remaining top part of the grass / reed, you then have to wrap it around the folded base to form and hold together what is to be the main part of the boat. Be sure to only wrap about half of the remaining shoot.

  • With the last section of the very top of the shoot still available too you, tuck it through the centre of what is to be the base of the boat and bring it up through, creating the sail.

  • Complete!... Now set sail!

Why Have I Chosen Illustration?

The main reasons for choosing to study Illustration at BA Hon Degree level, is that I feel Illustration suited my styles of working best. I haven’t always known that I’d be going to study an art form further, but it became clear to me throughout the past few years of my school life that an art subject was the way forward. I took the steps of applying for a local foundation course in Art and Design after my time at 6
th form, and from that chose to take Illustration further as my chosen topic.
I’ve always felt hampered by never knowing what career path I’ve wanted, therefore I have struggled in defining what particular topics to study and how to make big decisions related to my future academic studies and career direction.

What swayed me towards illustration during my foundation course was how I’ve always enjoyed the idea of making statements, making a stand and challenging majority views. From this I thought that illustration would be my best way forward.
I believe that communication through art is very important in this ever-growing world of debate and I’d like to help others around me to view the world in a positively different way.

I’m interested in 60s/70s music and surf artwork along with Art Nouveau. These have inspired my thoughts and design ideas into creating similarly influenced pieces. I collect Vinyl records from a variety of classic bands. What I feel is so important about vinyl, is that it’s a physical form of art; more than just the music; the sleeve the record comes in is also art, and it’s that that I love just as much as the bands and their music. Rick Griffin has been my biggest influence to date. His work on various classic albums, working for bands such as The Grateful Dead, Jackson Browne, and the Cult. Rick also produced surf inspired artwork, comic strips, and music posters. He was, along with Alton Kelley, Stanley ‘Mouse’ Miller, Victor Moscoso and Wes Wilson, known as one of the ‘Big Five’ of psychedelia. In 1967 they founded the Berkeley-Bonaparte distribution agency to produce and sell psychedelic poster art.
Rick’s style of working is something I regard as very ‘me’. The attention to detail, the musical, psychedelic, and later on Christian references, all played a part in why I dwell on his works and regard them highly as influences.

In the future, perhaps I’d like to take the same route as Rick and work for myself, maybe collaborate with fellow illustrators/ designers and start a movement of challenging views. Perhaps I will resort to surf artwork, album covers or produce work relating to, and for the church. Hopefully the next 2 years will help me to define my unique style of working and allow me to open up new doors and possibilities preparing me for the future.

That is why I have chosen illustration as a BA (hons) Degree course.

Rick Griffin

Richard Alden Griffin (June 18, 1944 - August 18, 1991) was an American artist and one of the leading designers of psychedelic posters in the 1960s. He was also a contributor to the underground comix movement whose work appeared regularly in Zap Comix Griffin was closely identified with the Grateful Dead, having designed some of their best known posters and record jackets. He was also known for his work within the surfing subculture, including his comic strip about a surfer named "Murphy".

Griffin was born near Palos Verdes amidst the surfing culture of southern California. After attending high school, he worked on the staff of Surfer magazine where he created his surfing comic strip. In Los Angeles, Griffin met a group of artists and musicians known as the Jook Savages and participated in the Watts Acid Test held by Ken Kesey.

After seeing the psychedelic rock posters that were being designed by Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelly, Griffin and the Jook Savages decided to move to San Francisco in the fall of 1966, where he designed posters in the living room of his home on Elsie Street in the Bernal Heights district. His first art exhibition was for the Jook Savages, but organizers for the Human Be-In saw his work and asked him to design a poster for their event in January 1967. Chet Helms was also impressed by Griffin's work and asked him to design posters for the Family Dog parties at the Avalon Ballroom, which led Griffin to create concert posters for The Charlatans. Eventually, a poster distribution agency by the name of Berkeley Bonaparte hired Griffin, where he teamed up with the leading poster artists of the 1960s.

Rick Griffin

Well, if i had to work towards becoming like any illustrator, it would most certainly be Rick.
I admire Ricks work for his variety. How he created album covers for bands such as The Grateful Dead, Cult and Jackson Browne. Yet at the same time produced Surf Art work and Concert posters!
In the latter part of 1970 Rick became a Christian and diverted a lot of his work in this direction exposing his fine art side.
In 1991 Rick was killed in a motorcycle accident in California.
